NEWARK, N.J. - Freshman Monique Goncalves (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) tallied her first career goal for the Hawks, but the Monmouth University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at NJIT at Lubetkin Field on Sunday night.

Goncalves, in her first collegiate start, knotted the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute off an assist from senior Jennie Vartebedian (Blackwood, N.J./Gloucester Catholic).

The Highlanders (2-4) netted the game-winner in the 80th minute when Jenny Cislo fed Gechi Ukaegbu from the back for her third score of the season.

NJIT took a 1-0 lead at the 32-minute mark of the first half when Erin Williams-Weir converted a penalty kick opportunity.

Monmouth, which outshot NJIT 15-9, which included a pair off the crossbar by junior Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks as well.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made a pair of stops in net for the Hawks, while her counterpart, Samantha Bersett made two saves for NJIT.

Monmouth (1-4) returns to action on Friday night September 7, when the Hawks host Lehigh University on The Great Lawn at 7:00 p.m.
