Grant Now All-Time Wins Leader as Memphis Beats Wisconsin, 2-1

September 11, 2011

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis head coach Richie Grant earned his 112th-career victory as Memphis beat Wisconsin, 2-1, improving to 4-0-1 on the season. With the win, Grant now stands as the all-time leader in victories as head coach of the Memphis Tigers.

Sophomore Mark Sherrod scored the game-winning goal, his third of the season, in the 78th minute. Sherrod collected the ball as Wisconsin attempted to clear it from the box. He fired a shot from 18 yards out to beat the keeper and give the Tigers the lead, 2-1, an advantage they wouldn't relinquish.

Senior defender Thomas Shannon scored on a header in the second minute giving Memphis the very early 1-0 lead in the contest, a lead the Tigers took into half. Sophomore Liam Collins found Junior Andreas Guentner who sent a cross into the box. Shannon headed the ball to the far-post past the keeper for his first goal of the season and ninth of his career.

Memphis largely controlled the first half of play, allowing only two shot attempts by Wisconsin. The Tigers took five shots in the half, putting two on frame.

Wisconsin would get the equalizer in the 65th minute when Joey Tennyson snuck in behind the Tiger defense and beat Conor Hurley.

Memphis remains undefeated through its first five games, its longest unbeaten streak to start the season since a 4-0 beginning to the 2005 campaign.

Sherrod leads the team with four goals and nine total points on the season. Collins' assist on Shannon's goal was his team leading fourth of the year. He currently stands second on the team with six points.

Memphis travels to Peoria, Ill., for a Friday evening tilt against Bradley in the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic hosted by Bradley. The game is slated for 7:00 P.M. CT at Shea Stadium.
