Green Bay women draw with Loyola
September 24, 2009
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Wisconsin-Green Bay women’s soccer team fought its way to a 0-0 double overtime tie Tuesday night in its Horizon League opener at a rainy Santaga Stadium. It was the second straight tie for the Phoenix (2-5-2) and the first of the season for the Ramblers (1-8-1).
Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) made a number of nice saves throughout the contest to keep Loyola off the scoreboard. The Ramblers outshot Green Bay 26-12 in the match, including a 15-4 margin in the second period, forcing Drusch to make a season high 12 stops.
Green Bay had one of its best chances to win in the second overtime when freshman midfielder Lauren Somers (Bloomington, Minn.) fired a shot from the top of the box in with just over a minute to play, forcing Loyola goalkeeper Katie Groesch to make a tough stop to secure the tie. It was one of seven saves for Groesch in the match.
Freshman forward Nicole Dooher (New Hope, Minn.) led the offensive attack for the Phoenix, taking four shots with two on goal. Fellow freshman Chanel Aries (Calgary, Alberta) also added a pair of shots on goal. Leading the Ramblers was Nikki Staton, who blasted five shots with four on goal.
Green Bay returns to action this weekend when it travels to face a pair of Horizon League opponents on the road. The Phoenix takes on Valparaiso on Friday, followed by a bout with Butler on Sunday.
