Grell Scores a Pair, Marauders Start 2-0

September 3, 2011

Millersville, Pa. – For the first time since 2000, the Millersville women’s soccer team begins the season with two-straight wins. Sophomore Alyssa Grell scored twice as the Marauders took down Chestnut Hill by a score of 2-1.

Millersville was coming off of its first win with loads of confidence, out shooting its previous opponent by a 21-4 margin and scoring the most goals in a game since Oct. 10, 2009. The Marauders had no let done against the Griffins early on in the contest, again possessing the ball for much of the first side.

In the 25th minute, Kelsey Mattola, who scored the game-winner on Thursday, fed the ball to Grell past two defenders. Grell met the ball in the box and put it past Chestnut Hill’s Jessica Veazey to put Millersville up, 1-0.

The Marauders received a free kick in the waning moments of the first half that was positioned much like the free kick goal scored by Allison Snyder on Thursday night. Snyder took the free kick from just outside the box. The ball was perfectly struck low and left making it through the wall, but Veazey read it perfectly to make a diving save.

The game became physical in the second half with the teams combining for 13 fouls in the match. Chestnut Hill received two yellow cards, one for knocking over Millersville keeper Laura Reed after she had already made a save.

The Griffins were finally able to answer with a goal of their own in the 63rd minute. Lauren Riiff took a pass from teammate Brittany Boles and found an opening in the defense to knot the game at 1-1.

It took less than 30 seconds for the Marauders to respond. Off the kick to restart the clock, Millersville took control of the ball. Senior Niki Roberts fed the ball down the right lane to Kiersten McLennan. McLennan dribbled the ball in deep and passed it over to Grell for her second goal of the game and put the Marauders up 2-1 with 27 minutes to play.

For the second-straight game Millersville outperformed its opponent, holding a 15-9 shots margin and scoring another late goal to take away thoughts of overtime.

The Marauders open up conference play next Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they host Slippery Rock. The game is slated for 1:30 p.m., with the men’s team following at 4 p.m. Both games will be broadcasted by the Marauder Sports Broadcasting Network (MSBN). Fans that cannot make it can listen or watch live.
