COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It wasn’t a Golden Goal, but it sure felt like it.

Sophomore midfielder Max Grossenbacher’s first career goal with 1:29 remaining in regulation gave Colorado College a 1-0 victory over Austin College on Friday night at Washburn Field.

“Max is an extremely hard worker and a very smart player,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “I’m absolutely elated that two relative newcomers combined for the winning goal. It shows that we have a lot of depth and can count on anybody to score.”

Grossenbacher got the first touch on sophomore midfielder Ryan Huettel’s 40-yard volley and slipped the ball past goalkeeper Andre Celio and inside the left post.

Most of the first half was played in the midfield, but the Tigers started generating scoring chances as the contest neared halftime.

Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie’s direct kick from 35 yards rolled through traffic and inches outside the right post 35 minutes into the game, and Celio made a spectacular save on a drive by freshman defender Christian Wulff with 12 seconds to go before the break.

Midway through the second half, Celio denied Ogilvie and senior forward Sean Parham in a span of 55 seconds to keep the game tied. Celio finished with seven saves.

“It must have been the full moon,” Richardson said. “As it was rising, we started to play better. It was an exciting game for the spectators with lots of good scoring chances against a worthy opponent.”

Sophomore Ian Horne made just one save, stopping Haroon Ismail’s drive from 10 yards away with 34 seconds to play to secure his first career shutout.

CC finished with a 23-6 advantage in total shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Tigers squared their overall record at 2-2-2 and improved to 2-0-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Austin slipped to 1-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the SCAC.

Colorado College plays host to Centenary at noon Sunday on Stewart Field.
