Guice’s hat trick leads Lobos past CSU 3-0

New Mexico 3, Colorado State 0 (Match Report)

Ft. Collins, Colo. – Lindsey Guice, a Fort Collins native playing on the same field she played club soccer on as a youth, scored the first hat trick by a Lobo in over three years, leading New Mexico to a 3-0 win over Colorado State, and keeping UNM in a first place tie with San Diego State.

Guice, who scored her first career goal just a week earlier in overtime to give the Lobos a 2-1 win over San Jose State, netted the first hat trick by a Mountain West player this season.  She popped two in the net in the first half and then her third in the second.

Guice opened the scoring at the 17:51 mark when Elba Holguin found her between two defender and she put home an uncontested shot past keeper Maggie Sherman for a 1-0 lead.  She found the back of the net again just 6:28 later when Dylann O’Connor hit a through ball that Guice used her speed to run onto and again slide it past Sherman.

She solidified her day in front of plenty of family and friends when she intercepted a pass and raced off on a breakaway getting past Sherman for her third of the day.

The game was dominated by New Mexico, who didn’t even allow a shot to the Rams until 7:33 remained in the contest.  UNM outshot CSU 11-1, and 8-1 on net.

Quotable

“We know their coach well, he’s tremendous…his kids are playing hard, and we know many of them.  They stayed with their game plan, but I thought we controlled the ball well.” -- head coach Kit Vela

“I’m really proud of Lindsey’s effort and the buildups leading up to it.  All three goals were scored on things we’ve been working on all season.  We also got a lot of players on the field and we still kept that chemistry … it was a good team effort.”  -- head coach Kit Vela

Notes

*The hat trick was the first for a Lobo since Oct. 1, 2010, when Jen Williams had three goals at UNLV in a 4-0 win.

*The six points in the game by Guice was the most since Oct. 28, 2011, when Jen Williams had two goals and two assists in a 7-1 win over TCU.  Williams had seven points in the 2010 UNLV game as she assisted on the opening goal before scoring her hat trick.

*In conference play Lindsey Guice has four goals on four shots on goal.

Next Up

New Mexico travels to Wyoming for a 3 p.m. conference game on Friday in Laramie.  After that who knows?  If the Republicans and Democrats can figure out how to get along in Congress, maybe the Lobos will travel to Air Force for a Sunday matchup at 11 a.m.  If Congress continues to behave like Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner, then the Lobos will come home and watch NFL football.
