WASHINGTON – Off to its best start in program history with a record of 5-1-0, the George Washington women’s soccer team has moved to the top of the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Mid-Atlantic Poll following four weeks of competition. The Colonials also received votes in the NSCAA Top 25 National Poll.

GW, which was ranked third in the Mid-Atlantic Poll the past three straight weeks, improved to No. 1 and received nine votes in the national rankings after a 1-1 weekend of challenging competition. The Colonials first downed previously undefeated ETSU, 3-1, at home for its fifth consecutive victory before being edged at district foe Georgetown, 1-0, in overtime.

The Colonials held the Bucs – who entered Friday’s contest as the nation’s leader in scoring offense at 5.0 goals and 15.33 points per game – scoreless through the first 79 minutes of action en route to the 3-1 win. GW got two goals from sophomore MacKenzie Cowley and another from redshirt junior Nicole Belfonti as it remained perfect on its home turf at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

The Buff and Blue had its five-match win streak snapped on Sunday at nearby Georgetown, which entered 2014 at No. 20 on the NSCAA National Preseason Poll, as the Hoyas scored a golden goal in the 96th minute to drop the Colonials from the ranks of the unbeaten.

With four shutouts victories and just two goals allowed this year, GW leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks eighth in NCAA Division I in goals-against average with 0.329 goals per game. The Colonials are fifth in the nation in save percentage (0.923) and are tied for 19th in shutout percentage (0.667). GW is also tied for 44th in the country and is atop the league in scoring offense with an average of 2.33 goals per game, while sitting second in the A-10 with 6.33 points per game.

The Colonials wrap their three-game non-conference road swing this weekend at Drexel and Delaware State. Action against the Dragons in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 1 p.m. kickoff versus the Hornets in Dover, Delaware on Sunday.
