NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington women's soccer junior Alex Neal was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after guiding her squad to back-to-back victories on the strength of two goals over Ivy League opponents Columbia and Cornell this weekend.

The award marks the first Player of the Week nod for Neal, who was tabbed A-10 Rookie of the Week on Sept. 20 and Oct. 4 of 2010. Her efforts this weekend helped the Colonials pick up their first wins of the 2012 season and sustain an unbeaten record at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

Neal's first goal of the season came in perfect fashion, as she netted the gamewinner in the Colonials' 1-0 win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon. The Lake Villa, Ill., native settled a cross from classmate Jane Wallis and fired the ball into the right side of the net in the 63rd minute of action to give GW the lone goal of the contest.

The midfielder's second tally of the weekend came in the Buff and Blue's 3-2 win over Cornell on Sunday. With the score knotted at 1-1, Neal gave GW a 2-1 lead at 60:17 when she dribbled her way around the Big Red defense and buried a shot into the left side of the net.

She leads the Colonials in scoring on the year with two goals and four points, and has registered a .600 shots on goal percentage. Neal and GW return to action at the Navy Invitational with matches against Towson on Friday at 4 p.m. and Rider on Sunday at 12 p.m.
