Hartwick Blanked by St. Peter’s, 1-0
ONEONTA, NY – Visiting St. Peter’s University (1-0-1) struck in the 66th minute for the game’s only goal on Friday night as the Peacocks defeated Hartwick’s men’s soccer team by a 1-0 final score. The loss drops the Hawks to 0-3 on the season.
Hartwick had most of its scoring chances in the first half of play, within a 10-minute window. With 13 minutes gone in the period, a serve from the right side of the Peacocks’ goal from Johnny McBeth (Glasgow, Scotland/Upper Iowa University) found Marco Torino (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford HS) who rifled a volley right at St. Peter’s keeper Robbie Anderson. Two minutes later, Jamie O’Grady’s (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk HS) blast from inside the box was sent high over the bar. After another five minutes, O’Grady put a header on target off the foot of Elliott Bentley (Leicestershire, England/Tresham College) but Anderson was up to the challenge to make a tough save.
Twenty minutes into the second half, St. Peter’s defender Steven Parry won a ball in his end and dashed forward into Hartwick territory. Twenty-five yards from the Hawks’ goal, he split two defenders with a pass to Jordan Jowers in the box. Jowers beat Hartwick goalkeeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) low to his right for a 1-0 Peacock advantage.
Hartwick only managed one shot over the final 25 minutes. The Hawks produced a corner in the waning seconds of the night but couldn’t generate the tying goal in the loss.
Wilson concluded the match with five stops for ’Wick. Anderson had four saves for St. Peter’s.
The Hawks are idle until next Friday night when they host the Mayor’s Cup. Hartwick opens with Fairfield University at 7 p.m.
