SAN FRANCISCO – Despite outshooting the Dons by a 16-5 margin, Harvard women’s soccer fell at San Francisco, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium in the USF Tournament.

Harvard moves to 0-2 on the season, while San Francisco advances to 4-1 on a second-half goal from Jaciara Mello.

Junior Cheta Emba earned the start in net, producing a half of scoreless soccer by grabbing three saves. Freshman Lizzie Durack saw her first collegiate action, recording the loss.   

USF struck first, as Mackenzie Krieser earned a penalty kick in the 58^th minute after being tripped in the box. Mello belted the PK to the left of Durack for the lone score of the match.  

Despite possessing the ball for the majority of the half and outshooting the Dons 10-3, Harvard and USF played to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes. The best chance for Harvard in the first half came with 13 minutes remaining before the break, as a foul gave Peyton Johnson a free kick just above the box. The senior captain missed just high after the USF wall got a piece of the shot.

In the 55^th minute, freshman Midge Purce drove down the far side of the field, blasting a shot at the net, but USF keeper Madelyn Schiffel was able to make the save.

Harvard opens its home slate on Tuesday, Sept. 11 vs. New Hampshire at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium.  Action is set to start at 7 p.m.
