Hawks top Stony Brook 1-0

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  –  The University of Hartford men's soccer team took down the visiting Stony Brook Seawolves on Wednesday evening, picking up a 1-0 win at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. Scoring his first goal of the season in the 53rd minute, senior Rohan Roye provided the only offense of the match as the Hawks improve to 6-5-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the America East. With the loss, the Seawolves (3-9-1) drop to 1-2-0 in league action.

Sophomore David MacKinnon made three saves, including two in the second half, to help Hartford earn the shutout, its fourth of the season. He enhances his overall record to 5-5-2 as the Hawks remain unbeaten in West Hartford with a 5-0-0 mark.

Hartford closes out a two-game homestand on Saturday evening when it plays host to the New Hampshire Wildcats. The two league foes are scheduled to kick off from Al-Marzook Field at 7 p.m.

GOALS SUMMARY:

  • Senior Rohan Roye single handedly broke open a scoreless match in the 54th minute, giving Hartford the advantage after dribbling down the right side of the field and beating Stony Brook keeper Tom McMahon with a blast to the left post from 20 yards out       

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The lone scoring opportunity of the first half for Hartford came in the 23rd minute from sophomore Jeff Tryon's shot from the right side from 20-yards out was smothered by Stony Brook keeper Tom McMahon
  • David MacKinnon was tested late in the first half out of a free kick, but kept the match scoreless heading into the break as he made the stop on Martin Giordano's shot from 22 yards out in the 40th minute into action for the first time all evening in the 40th minute as he came up with his first save out of a Martin Giordano shot from 22-yards out on a free kick
  • Six minutes after the Hawks netted the go-ahead goal thanks to an unassisted score from Rohan Roye, MacKinnon came up with a key stop on a deflection from the Seawolves' Fernando Wadskier, securing the ball before it reached to the goal line
  • Despite the Stony Brook scoring opportunity, Hartford continued to dominate the second half, producing several near misses throughout the final 15 minutes of the match
  • With 14 minutes left, junior Javoni Simms had a shot at doubling his team's lead, blasting a shot from 22-yards out; he missed just tall and wide left
  • With nine minutes to go, Jhamie Hyde also nearly made it a 2-0 game, taking a serve into the box from Roye following a foul and heading it into the crossbar; the attempt dropped just short of the goal line
  • Maintaining possession for the final minutes of the second, Udi Cohen produced a trio of scoring opportunities as time was winding down
  • Hitting the left post on a lateral pass from Tryon inside of the box, Cohen collected the rebound and redirected a shot to the opposite post, one that was saved by McMahon 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The first half, which featured three shots from each side, proved to be an even one as each squad produced one scoring opportunity
  • Picking up the offense in the second half, Hartford and Stony Brook each took nine shots and finished even in the category at 12-12
  • The Hawks put four of their shots on goal, but had two near misses down the stretch as a Jhamie Hydeshot in the crossbar and an Udi Cohen attempt drilled off the post
  • Hartford keeper David MacKinnon finished with three saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season
