Heidelberg dominates Muskingum 3-0
NEW CONCORD - The Heidelberg University men's soccer team continued their strong start to conference play, recording a 3-0 win over Muskingum on Saturday, October 11. The Student Princes got out to a 1-0 lead at the half and added on two more goals in the second half to seal the victory.
Heidelberg dominated the game in the first half, out-shooting the Muskies 14-1. Despite that edge, the match remained scoreless until the 32nd minute when Hamid Shariff found Nico Samaniego off of a corner kick to give the 'Berg a 1-0 lead.
The second half was much of the same for the Student Princes, as they continue to control the match. They broke through again in the 66th minute when Kurt Wilhelm found an open Chris Koczak in front of the goal, who was able to beat the keeper to push the Heidelberg lead to two.
It didn't take long for the Student Princes to add on again, as they found the back of the net less than two minutes later when Kyle Simpson drilled home the third goal of the match. The Heidelberg defense held up through the rest of the match as they came away victorious.
Heidelberg out-shot the Muskies 26-7 on the match. Koczak led the way with six shots, while Simpson, Andres Isea and Samaniego all recorded four.
Matthew Stevens had a relatively calm day in goal, not picking up any saves in the shutout, despite the seven shots by Muskingum.
The Student Princes will be back in action this Tuesday, October 14, when they come back home to face John Carroll, who is currently ranked 24th in Division III. That match is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 p.m. at Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
