Holy Cross Men's Soccer Outlasted By Sacred Heart, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – The rain and slippery conditions were not in favor of the Holy Cross men’s soccer team as the squad lost 1-0 loss against Sacred Heart in non-conference action at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the decision, Holy Cross moves to a record of 0-2-1, while the Pioneers improve to a record of 2-1-0. Sophomore Joshua Cintas (San Diego, Calif.) put a team-high three shots on-goal but was unable to break through for his first goal of the season. Sacred Heart scored the first goal of the game at the 12:54 mark on the second shot taken from a corner kick set-up. Holy Cross picked up the offensive pressure towards the end of the half as sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Basking Ridge, N.J.) put two shots on-goal. The Crusaders did not score, however, and went into the half down 1-0. The Crusaders accumulated 11 corner kick opportunities in the second half as well as nine shots but were still unable to find the back of the net as Sacred Heart also went scoreless in the second stanza. The Holy Cross defense kept the Pioneers to six shot attempts as the team fell by the final 1-0 score. Holy Cross goalkeeper, freshman Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) registers a record of 0-2-1 on the season after making a season-high six saves in the net. Sacred Heart keeper, senior Alex Fait, finished the game with six saves and tallies a record of 2-1-0 on the season. The Pioneers totaled 11 shots, and were led by junior defender Marcello Castro, who scored their lone goal. Holy Cross next competes in the Brown Soccer Classic beginning Sept. 9. The Crusaders will first face off against Temple at 5:00 p.m. on Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I.
