Holy Cross Men's Soccer Ties George Mason, 2-2, In Final Day At Brown Soccer Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The sophomores had their day, notching all of the Holy Cross men’s soccer team’s points against George Mason as the Crusaders earned a solid 2-2 tie in the final day of action in the Brown Soccer Classic held at Stevenson Field. With the decision, Holy Cross goes to a record of 0-3-2 while the Patriots combine for a record of 2-2-1. Sophomores Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) and Tommy Uttaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored for the squad while Joshua Cintas (San Diego, Calif.) picked up his first career assist. George Mason scored the first goal of the game just over six minutes into game action. Sanders then connected at the 25:11 mark to tie the game at 1-1 after heading the ball to himself and hooking a shot in with his right foot. The teams remained scoreless for the rest of the half, going into the break all tied up with one goal apiece as the Patriots held a 9-8 shots advantage. Uttaro and Cintas worked together to put the Crusaders up 2-1 at 58:51 as Uttaro put the ball through in the left corner, shooting from the right side. George Mason would pick up the offensive tempo over the final minutes of regulation and capitalized on a scoring opportunity at 79:55 to tie the score at 2-2 and sending the teams into overtime. Freshman Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) came up big with three saves in the two overtime periods and not allowing George Mason to score again. Holy Cross put two more shots on-goal, but could not find the back of the net as the teams finished in the 2-2 tie. Thompson registers a record of 0-3-2 on the season after making a season-high 10 saves. George Mason’s replacement goalkeeper, Sean Cote, finished the game with three saves and picks up his first decision on the season, 0-0-1. The Patriots totaled 25 shots, including 12 on-goal while the Crusaders had a total of 15 shooting opportunities, including nine on-goal. Holy Cross competes in its third straight contest held in Rhode Island versus Providence on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
