WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Eddie Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal and freshman goalie Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) posted his first collegiate shutout in his first start as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Army, 1-0, on Saturday evening at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium in the Patriot League season opener for both teams. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-5-0 overall (1-0-0 PL), while the Black Knights fall to 2-6-0 overall (0-1-0 PL). 

"It is great to start the Patriot League season 1-0," said head coach Marco Koolman. "We talked about how you have to win your home league games so this was very important."

Army had a strong scoring opportunity at 6:00 when Trent Brown sent a header just over the goal. At 8:15, the Crusaders took the first shot on net when junior Josh Cintas (San Diego, Calif.) had an attempt saved by Army goalie Winston Boldt. At the 33:54 mark, Viscount netted his first collegiate goal when junior Kevin O'Connell (Basking Ridge, N.J.) sent a crossing pass from the left corner as Viscount then buried the ball in the back of the net from eight yards out. Junior captain Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) also posted an assist. Army outshot Holy Cross by a 9-4 margin for the half, but the Crusaders took three shots on goal and the Black Knights tallied one. "The goal was very well done," said Koolman. "It was a great crossing pass from O'Connell and Viscount was right where should be at the back post."

With 21:00 remaining in the second half, Wright made an outstanding save as Brown deflected a pass from just five yards out, but Wright caught the shot and kept Army from finding the back of the net. With just 40 second left, the Black Knights took their ninth corner kick of the contest but were unable to get a shot opportunity. Wright made a total of three second-half saves to keep Army off the scoreboard for the 1-0 Crusader victory.

Wright made four saves for the game and earns his first collegiate win and is 1-0-0 on the season, while Boldt also posted four saves. Army outshot Holy Cross, 14-8, but the Crusaders tallied five shots on goal and the Black Knights posted four. Army had all nine corner kicks for the game.

The Crusaders return to action when they play at Northeastern on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6:00 p.m.
