Hoosiers Down Oakland on Velasquez Game-Winner

August 28, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior Orianica Velasquez racked up her fifth career game-winning goal for the Cream and Crimson on Sunday with her tally in the 54th minute against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (0-3), giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 win at Armstrong Stadium. Freshman Jordan Woolums picked up the assist on the play, her second of the season.

“We are very happy to get another win at home,” head coach Mick Lyon said. “It was a different kind of week for us since we played at South Florida on Friday and then had a home game today but the players responded well and put together some very dangerous scoring chances throughout the game.”

Lindsay Campbell picked up her second win of the season in goal for Indiana (2-1-1), making two saves in the shutout. It is her 12th career shutout and the first since Oct. 18, 2009, at Michigan. She now moves into third place on the IU career shutouts list, just three behind the all-time leader Ashley Davis’ career mark of 15.

Indiana finished with a commanding 18-7 edge in shots and only allowed one shot by the Golden Grizzlies in the second half.

Indiana (2-1-1) picked up the pace of play late in the first half and carried it back out onto the field with them after halftime, forcing the Oakland defense into a couple of mistakes that led to excellent scoring chances for the Hoosiers. Lisa Nouanesengsy stole an errant outlet pass and broke in on goal all alone but her attempt to hit the back post rolled just wide midway through the first half. Jordan Woolums also had a golden chance to get her first collegiate goal but her header attempt went wide right in the first half.

The second half saw a couple of outstanding chances in on goal for Velasquez, who finished with a match-high eight shots. She was able to capitalize on the first chance of the second half, receiving the pass from Woolums on the right side of the box, taking a touch toward the center of the field and firing a shot past O’Shea on the near side for her third goal of the season.

“We told ourselves at halftime that we needed to win this game,” Velasquez said. “So we came out determined to do that in the second half and were able to get the goal we needed to get a win.”

Freshman Abby Smith sent Velasquez in all alone on goal with a perfectly played ball through the OU defense but a diving save by Payj O’Shea prevented the Hoosiers from denting the scoreboard further. Later in the half, Velasquez once again broke loose inside the box and fired a shot on goal the O’Shea was able to turn away, but IU’s Rebecca Dreher was right there with a shot to add to the IU lead but it sailed over the crossbar, so the lead remained 1-0.

The Hoosiers will travel to South Bend, Ind., next weekend to take part in the Notre Dame adidas Invitational, where they will play Western Michigan on Friday and then play No. 1 Notre Dame on Sunday.
