Hoosiers Drop Big Ten Opener to Michigan, 1-0

September 18, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – On Sunday, the Indiana University women’s soccer team put seven of its 12 shots on goal but were not able to get a tally and suffered a 1-0 loss to the Michigan Wolverines (6-2-1, 1-0 Big Ten) in the first conference game for both teams.

Indiana (4-4-1, 0-1 Big Ten) registered 12 shots in the game while Michigan collected 11, but just three of the Wolverines shots were on goal. The Hoosiers held a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks as well but were just not able to put anything past UM goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer.

“I have no complaints about the effort we put in or how we were organized or how we attacked,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “We created a ton of chances, unfortunately it’s finishing one or two of those chances that makes the difference and that’s kind of where we fell down today. But big time credit goes to the players for pushing all the way to the end and show we are certainly talented enough to win the rest of the Big Ten games.”

The Wolverines created a couple good chances early in the first half but IU goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell was up to the task, making two diving saves on point-blank shots.

Michigan scored the only goal of the contest in the 48th minute when Shelina Zadorosky sent a ball in on goal from 25 yards out in the middle of the field and it floated over Campbell’s hand and just under the cross bar for her first goal of the season.

The Hoosiers responded late in the 2nd half by giving the ball to Orianica Velasquez on the wing and letting her create. She created the best opportunity of the day with a cross that skipped over the waiting foot of Carly Samp in the middle of the box.

Big Ten play continues for Indiana next weekend at home when they host Iowa on Friday at 5:00 p.m. followed by Nebraska on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game against the Huskers will be available on BTN.com (fee required). The Indiana men’s team will also play at Armstrong Stadium on Friday night after the women’s game with their start time approximately 7:30 p.m.
