Lady Hornets Land Four on All-SWAC Preseason Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The two-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Alabama State University women's soccer team landed four players on the All-SWAC Preseason Team, the conference announced Tuesday morning.
 
In addition to earning four preseason nods, the Lady Hornets collected two out of three SWAC individual awards and were predicted to finish first in the conference.
 
Defender Mercedes Padilla, goalkeeper Gianna Guyot and forward Teaggan Ilela earned All-SWAC preseason first team honors, while midfielder Shyann Cordova was recognized on the second team.
 
Padilla, who was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday, led Alabama State's defense that surrendered just 1.76 goals per game last season and ranked first in goals against average in conference play. The Norwalk, Calif. native, who was tabbed the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year last year, played in all 21 games while logging 1,688 minutes.
 
Guyot, the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, appeared in 20 games in the net last season, earning the distinction as the SWAC's premiere net protector. The Costa Mesa, Calif. native led the team in minutes with 1,734 and led the league in goals against average in conference matches (.067). She also led the SWAC with a .875 save percentage, collecting 135 saves while posting five shutouts.

Ilela earned first team recognition after appearing in all 21 games in 2017, logging 1,413 minutes. The Westminster, Colo. product finished with five goals and nine assists for 19 points, which ranked fourth on the team. Ilela also posted 17 shots on goal and a .447 shots on goal percentage.
 
Returning from a productive junior year during which she logged 1,584 minutes as a midfielder and started all 21 games for the Lady Hornets, Cordova (Albuquerque, N.M.) enters 2018 after finishing the 2017 campaign with one goal, four assists and six points.
 
Alabama State was picked to win the regular season title with a total of 168 points. Grambling State was second with 145 points, followed by Howard (142), Texas Southern (129), Prairie View A&M (96) and Alabama A&M (74). Mississippi Valley State (72), Jackson State (67), Alcorn State (57), Arkansas Pine-Bluff (54) and Southern (52) rounded out the standings.
