Hornets Land 5 on PreSeason All Conference

@BamaStateWSC picked to finish third, five players selected All-SWAC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State was picked to finish third in the 2019 Preseason Poll and had five players selected Preseason All-Conference as selected on a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors, announced by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Friday afternoon.

The Lady Hornets, who finished the season in the semifinals of the conference tournament a season ago, was picked to finished behind Howard (172) and Grambling State (141) with 138 votes. They were picked ahead of Prairie View A&M (133) and Texas Southern (97) in the poll.

Alabama State also had five players selected Preseason All-SWAC, including one first team selection in Teaggan Ilela. The total number of players selected to the team for the Lady Hornets matched Howard for the most, while Grambling State and Texas each had a pair of selections. 

Ilela was a Preseason All-Conference selection last season and finished second on the team in goals scored in 2018. She also added five assists to finish second on the team in points for 13, tying for ninth in the conference in the same category. She was also tied for seventh in the conference in assists and scored three of her four goals in conference play.

Meanwhile, the Lady Hornets had four players named Second Team All-Conference, including a pair of defenders and midfielders. Alanna Manning and Ashley Thomas were each named Second Team All-Conference defenders after helping the team to six shutouts. Thomas added a pair of goals from her defender position, finishing the season with four points with three shots on goal.

Meaghan Fielding was named Second Team midfielder for Alabama State after she finished fourth in the team in points with six. She added a pair of assists and finished with 16 total shots (including nine on goal). She scored of her goals (and both of her assists) against Alcorn State in conference play. Meanwhile, McKenna Lupori was named Second Team midfielder after she scored on goal on 12 shots – including second on goal. Her only goal of the season came in conference play against Mississippi Valley State.

Alabama State opens the season August 22 against Fairleigh Dickinson in the first game of the UTRGV Tournament in Edinburg (Texas). The match kicks at 4 pm.

Alabama State soccer won back-to-back SWAC championships in 2016 and 2017, their first in school history. The Lady Hornets appeared in four of five championship games prior to the 2018 season, while head coach Jodie Smith picked up career win 175 during the 2018 season at Alabama State.
