September 10, 2014

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has selected three Alabama State UNIVERSITY soccer players for the weekly SWAC Athlete of the Week honors for the first week in September.

On the soccer field, selections included freshman Sabina Claesson for the Offensive Player of the Week, junior Shelbi Vienna-Hallam as the Defensive Player of the Week and senior Kylee Hathaway as the conference's top goalkeeper.

The awards are given to the student-athletes who demonstrated exceptional performance during this past week's action.

Claesson, a newcomer from Sweden, made her mark by picking up her first career goal and game-winner in last Friday's 1-0 win at UNC-Asheville.

Vienna-Hallam, who grew up in Australia, was instrumental in the shutout and was praised for her strong work ethic and leadership on the field from ASU women's soccer coachJodie Smith. She played all 90 minutes and has shown to be the most consistent player in the back.

Hathaway, the Pomona, Calif. native, enjoyed another successful week in which she SECURED her third shutout of the season on nine saves in a 1-0 victory at the University of North Carolina-Asheville last Friday.

Hathaway picked up another additional nine saves in last Sunday's match at Presbyterian and worked a clean sheet through the opening 65 minutes of play

Earlier in the day, Hathaway was also named the Madness SWAC Player of the Week.
