PINE BLUFF, Ark. | Inma Martinez scored the lone goal of the contest, in the second half, as Alabama State University shutout the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff 1-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action Sunday.

"We definitely had to grind it out today," Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith said. "We struggled to find any rhythm in the first half, but we came out in the second half and started winning the 50-50 balls which was the difference.

"It was another great effort from our defense and Gianna (Guyot) with the clean sheet. It was a great goal from Inma and we needed it. She struck the ball well from the top of the 18."

Alabama State (7-7, 5-2 SWAC) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-11-1, 1-5-1 SWAC) were scoreless through the first half and one minute into the second half, before Lexi Krieger found Inma Martinez at the top of the 18. The senior hit a shot just out of the reach of Arkansas-Pine Bluff goalkeeper Sariah Orocu for the goal.

The Lady Lions had an opportunity to tie the match in the 87th minute after Karissa Kenwick hit the post and bounded away out of danger.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff outshot the Lady Hornets 11-10, with Gianna Guyot recording a season-high nine saves on the day – giving her 99 on the season.

Alabama State returns home to host Jackson State Friday night at 7 pm, before facing Southern Sunday afternoon at 1 pm in their final home game of the season.
