Alabama State earns three individual honors in soccer

Five players were named All-Conference for the Lady Hornets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) announced the 2017 All-Conference team and individual honors Wednesday morning, and Alabama State – the regular season champion – won three individual honors and had five players earn all-conference honors.
 
Senior Ariela Lewis, the Preseason SWAC Player of the Year, was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year for her 12-goal performance this season. The award is the second consecutive for Lewis, who is the NCAA active leader in goals and points scored. She led the conference this season in goals and in points (26), while leading the conference in points per game (1.62 per game).
 
Sophomore Mercedes Padilla was named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year after helping lead the Lady Hornets back line that led the conference in goals against average in conference play. Alabama State recorded a 0.70 goals against average in conference play this season, and allowed just seven goals during SWAC play – leading the conference.
 
Junior Gianna Guyot was named the SWAC goalkeeper of the year on a vote by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. She led the league in goals against average in conference play (.067) and save percentage (.875) this season. Guyot also ranked sixth in total saves in conference play, recording 42.
 
Senior Inma Martinez earned First Team All-Conference honors as midfielder, finishing third on the team in total points (18). She was third on the team in goals (seven) and third in assists (four), while helping lead Alabama State to the regular season crown.
 
Meanwhile, senior forward Lexi Krieger was named Second Team All-Conference after she finished second on the team in goals scored (nine) and tied for the team lead in assists (eight). She finished tied with Lewis in points (26) and led the team in total shots (47).
 
Alabama State earned the most All-SWAC selections with five players; while Howard, Grambling State and Texas Southern each had three players selected. Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff each had to players selected; while Alcorn State, Prairie View A&M and Alabama A&M each had one player earn All-SWAC recognition.
 
The Lady Hornets open the conference tournament Thursday morning in Texas against eighth-seeded Alcorn State at 10 am.
