Hounds Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to CSU-Pueblo

PORTALES, N.M. — For the second consecutive contest, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (3-1) went to overtime. Although the Greyhounds held a 16-10 edge in shots, which included a 3-1 advantage in overtime, Colorado State-Pueblo (2-1) netted the only goal of Friday’s 1-0 contest, 8:25 into overtime, at Greyhound Field.

The setback snaps the Hounds’ three-game win streak. The contest was the fifth overall between the programs, with the only other meeting at ENMU Soccer Field (Sept. 4, 2005), being played to a scoreless, double-overtime tie.

Eastern’s best scoring opportunity came with an early-second half flurry in from of the Thunderwolf net, when Michael Stewart’s (Sr., D, Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS) header went to the right side of the net and Chris Marrone’s (Jr., D, Tucson, Ariz./Pima CC) shot bounced off the near goal post, 11:41 into the period.

After three quick overtime shots by ENMU, the Thunderwolves found Jonny Sawyer on the left side of the box. Sawyer dribbled through traffic and scored from the left side of the net.

Each team had a pair of corner kicks, while the Hounds held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. CSU-Pueblo goalkeeper, Sam Haseltine made three saves.

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will continue its home stand, on Sunday, against Adams State. The game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. MDT.
