Hurricanes Take Down Eagles 4-0

After a near two-hour lightning delay, the Miami Hurricanes women’s soccer team opened its home campaign with a 4-0 win over Morehead State Friday night at Cobb Stadium.

 
The Hurricanes’ victory would be stopped short in the 79th minute at the familiar sound of the campus lightning detector. Luckily for the Hurricanes (2-1-0), another strong offensive showing had finalized the decision well before the “official” 70-minute mark.
 
Behind three first-half goals from three different players, the Hurricanes cruised to their second win of the season. After a powerful header in the box from senior Ali Brennan opened the scoring in the fifth minute, freshmen Jasmine Paterson and Ally Andreini opened their accounts with goals eight minutes apart to put Miami ahead 3-0 by the halftime horn. Brennan would tally once again in the second half to cap off the victory.
 
The Hurricanes, who dominated on set pieces to earn a 4-1 victory over then-No. 21 Florida last weekend, were equally as effective against the Eagles. Brennan’s header off a corner kick from junior Tara Schwitter was followed by Jasmine’s tally on another corner. Brennan would tally her second goal of the night late in the second half, another header that found its way past goalkeeper Hannah Seeman on a free kick.
 
“We created some pretty good opportunities all around,” second-year head coach Tom Anagnost said. “And Ali was great in the box tonight.”
 
Even with Brennan’s brace, fellow senior Tina Romagnuolo delivered a “Man of the Match”-type performance with her strong play on and off the ball. Romagnuolo’s perfect delivery on a set piece just outside the 18-yard box enabled Brennan’s late finish, and her brilliant one-time cross to Andreini was buried past Seeman into the right corner.
 
“Tina did really well. She played quicker today, which is what we’ve tried to get her to do,” Anagnost said. “She was very good in the air as well. I’m very proud of the way she played.”
 
First-year players continued to make an impact for Coach Anagnost and his staff, as Paterson and Andreini became the fourth and fifth newcomers to tally in the shutout.
 
“Ally does so much that a lot of people don’t see out there, and finished on a beautiful goal,” Anagnost added. “And I’m really glad Jasmine scored when it counted. I know there will be a lot more to come for her.”
 
The Hurricanes continue their season Sunday with a showdown on the road at No. 9 UCF. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
