SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Indiana, playing in the state of California for the first time since 2005, played to a 0-0 draw at UC Santa Barbara on Friday night behind a career-high nine saves in goal by junior Shannon Flower.

The last time an IU goalkeeper made that many saves was Lindsay Campbell on Sept. 30, 2011, at Illinois. And the last 0-0 draw for the Hoosiers was Oct. 18, 2009, against Michigan.

Early in the first half, the teams traded a pair of corner kicks with neither squad able to come away with a marker. Then shots by Orianica Velasquez and Caitlin O’Connor were saved by UCSB (0-3-1) goalkeeper Makenna Henry to keep the Hoosiers (3-1-1) off the board. In the middle of the half, the Gauchos were able to rattle off a number of shots but Flower was up to the task and the teams went into the locker room at halftime without a goal scored. UCSB held a 7-6 edge in shots during the first half, but Flower only had to make one save while Henry made three for UCSB.

In the second half, the Gauchos continued to take shots but few were finding the frame while the Hoosiers were not registering as many attempts but they were more accurate with their shots. UCSB outshot IU, 8-4, in the second half of play but both teams had three shots on goal.

In the 83rd minute, UCSB’s Taylor Gehring drew a yellow card and Orianica Velasquez stepped up to take the attacking free kick. She put the shot on frame but Henry was there to knock it away. Both keepers made saves in the final four minutes of play to send the contest into overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Gauchos were aggressive at the start, forcing Flower to make three saves over the first six minutes. But in the final two minutes, the Hoosiers owned possession and the run of play but shots by Velasquez and Lisa Nouanesengsy were thwarted by Henry so the teams went to a second overtime period.

In that second extra period, UCSB put two shots on goal in the first three minutes but Flower again was up to the task and the Hoosiers held on for the draw.

The Hoosiers will conclude their two-game California road trip with a matchup against No. 5 Pepperdine on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. ET. It will be the highest ranked opponent Indiana has faced since playing at No. 2 Penn State on Sept. 23, 2005.
