Indiana Falls to No. 18 Penn State, 3-0

October 9, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 18 Penn State (12-3, 5-1 Big Ten) at Armstrong Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Hoosiers trailed 1-0 at the half but the Nittany Lions were able to find the back of the goal twice in a two-minute span in the second half to put the game away.

“It was a tough day for us,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “We didn’t play all that bad, but we just have to regroup and I know we will rebound for our next game on Thursday at Purdue.”

Indiana (6-7-1, 2-4 Big Ten) put together the first attack of the game as Orianica Velasquez beat the Penn State back line and sent a cross through the box that was just out of the reach of Lisa Nouanesengsy.

Maya Hayes, the leading goal scorer in the Big Ten and the country, scored a pair of goals for the Nittany Lions to give her 18 on the season. Her first came in the sixth minute as a through ball put her in on IU goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell and she was able to put it just inside the back post. After Carly Niness scored her first goal of the season in the 65th minute, Hayes struck again just over two minutes later to give the final score of 3-0.

Campbell made three saves in goal for Indiana while Erin McNulty recorded a pair of saves in her 75:14 in goal before being replaced by Krissy Tribbett for the final 14:46.

Penn State held a 14-6 advantage in shots in the match and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Hoosiers will play at Purdue on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. before returning home for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 16, against Michigan State at 1:00 p.m.
