Iona men beat Rider

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team recorded its second consecutive victory with a 3-1 triumph over Rider (2-14-1, 1-6-1 MAAC) at Mazzella Field. The Gaels have now won four of their last five and improved to 5-3 in MAAC play (7-8-1 overall). Iona established control from the outset, scoring in the second minute. Freshman F Victor Munoz (Madrid, Spain) served the ball to classmate Samuel Adjei (Newark, NJ), who beat a Rider defender one-on-one in the middle of the field and sent a shot straight into the net for his fourth goal of the year. The Gaels struck again as senior M Julian Grajales (White Plains, NY) pushed the lead to 2-0, scoring off a rebound out of goalkeeper Matt Perrella's arms following a saved shot by MJ Nestor (Avalon, NJ). Nestor and Mario Rios (Denville, NJ) earned assists on the play. The Broncs reached the scoreboard in the 42nd minute to cut the margin to 2-1 by halftime. Andrew Cotes picked up his first tally of the season with help from Sal Lubrano. The Maroon & Gold added an insurance goal in the 52nd minute which came off the head of freshman Orlando Castaneda (Long Island, NY). Adjei crossed the ball from right to left, from where it was headed into the left corner of the net by the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week. Iona held a strong 20-8 shot advantage in the contest, while Rider led 5-2 in corner kicks. Perrella finished with eight saves for the Broncs. In goal for the Gaels, sophomore Jesse Fullerton (Weston, FL) saved two to earn his seventh win. The squad will close out the regular season on Sunday, hosting Loyola at 1:00 pm. JMU finished with a 15-11 advantage in shots and had a 5-2 edge in corners. Bodenschatz had five saves for the Patriots.
