Iona Women's Soccer Wins On Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team picked up a key Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win over Saint Peter's on senior day on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 1-0.

Prior to the contest, the Head Coach Sarah Brady and her staff honored seniors Anna HigdonChristine RebusCharlotte StuartMarisa BentleyMarissa DundasChristine Rebus, and Julia Campagna.  Also shouted out during the pregame ceremony were graduate students Jacque Rice and Erika Flowers.

Junior Mariana Jaramillo scored the game-winning goal in 77th minute with a one-touch shot that touched just underneath the crossbar past substitute goaltender senior Taylor McLean.  Sophomore Mariah Elsenheimer created the opportunity by drawing in the defense; she dribbled horizontally outside the penalty box.  Once four Peacock players corralled around her, Elsenheimer dropped it off to Jaramillo for her second goal of the season.

Martinez recorded her second shutout of the season in net, needing only one save over the course of the regulation.  Junior Kelsey Nugent put forth a corner in the 74th minute which led to chaos in the box.  Martinez was forced to save a close-range shot attempt by senior Carlee Gonzalez.

Campagna had a game-high four shots including two shots on target.  Additionally, Bentley and Jaramillo each put forward to shots on goal.

Iona outshot Saint Peter's 12-1 in the first half, and ended the game with a 20-7 advantage come the end of the game.  Combined, Freshman Victoria Scarratt and McLean made eight saves in net for the Saint Peter's.

The Maroon & Gold have its final regular season game at Niagara on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Lewiston, NY.
