IUPUI women defeat Detroit

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team scored a goal late in regulation to send Friday's match with Detroit to overtime before netting the game-winner in the 98th minute to extend its winning streak to four straight. Sophomore Megan Hock walked the game-winner into the net after a nifty through ball from Katrina McCrory to kick off Super Jaguars Weekend at Kuntz Stadium with a bang.

McCrory threaded the pass to Hock on a sprint to goal, who then tapped the ball to her right to elude Detroit (1-2-1) goalkeeper Joanna Hinde. With nothing but green in front of her, Hock took the ball over the end line with her to collect her fourth goal in as many games and her third game-winner of the season.

"I knew I wasn't going to miss," Hock said. "I made sure I dribbled it in because I had a bad angle. When I tapped it around her, I knew I had pretty good speed with my feet and nobody in front of me."

Hock's goal capped a tremendous comeback that was begun by Stacy Levack late in regulation. Levack came on initially in the 65th minute before being subbed out of the game for sophomore Hock 15 minutes later. Then, having been back on the field for just 61 seconds, the third-year sophomore knotted the score at 1-1 with her first collegiate goal.

"Stacy (Levack) was just hustling around, putting pressure on them, winning balls and doing things to help us win the game. The kids who were on the bench were just not happy with what was going on on the field and they made an effort to change it," Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "Their energy was contagious."

Senior Stephanie Hoffman played a long restart from near midfield deep into the Detroit 18-yard box that got in behind Hinde. Levack slipped in on the connecting end of the ball and banged a shot into the open net with just 5:26 left in regulation.

After a pedestrian first 90 minutes, senior goalkeeper Jamie Farrell and the IUPUI (4-2-0) defense put on a show in overtime, biding time before allowing the offense to win it. Farrell made a diving stop of a Trina Kochanski breakaway in the 92nd minute and freshman Lisa Thomas cleared a ball from just inside the left post off a drive from Janae Paveglio 38 seconds later. Farrell later gloved a shot by Nina Carter, built up by the Titans' fifth corner kick of the evening.

"They were dangerous on corner kicks. I knew any corner kick we gave away would be a good opportunity for them," Farrell said. "They had the pressure on us for sure, but we didn't let up."

Detroit scored its lone goal of the game right before halftime, also off a corner kick. After a scrambled corner, the ball came free to Alyssa Korson who dropped a pass back to Sarah Dzuris. Dzuris lined a shot through traffic, placing it just beyond Farrell's outstretched hands and inside the left post just 1:17 before the break.

The goal snapped Farrell's scoreless streak at over 300 minutes and was her only blemish on a night in which she recorded four saves. Hinde made two stops for Detroit in over 97 minutes work. Offensively, Hock led all players with four shot attempts while Brock attempted three off the bench. Brock nearly ended the match in the 96th minute when she climbed above her marking defender to head a shot just over the crossbar on Levack's corner kick.

The win came in front of a crowd of 1,126 fans on Kram Kuntz Night, as part of Super Jaguars Weekend. Despite the large crowd, Johnson was concerned that his troops came out flat before finding their flow in the second half.

"Tonight started out like the other two (home) games started out, but we just didn't bring the energy level to be successful," Johnson said. "Fortunately, we hung in there and hustled and got a couple hustle goals at the end."

IUPUI returns to action next Friday when they travel to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan at 4:00 p.m..
