TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Ines Jaurena capped off Senior Day Sunday afternoon converting on a golden goal penalty kick opportunity in the 96th minute of the first overtime period to lead No. 1 Florida State to a 1-0 victory over No. 13 Virginia in front of a great crowd of 1,379 inside the Seminole Soccer Complex.

Jaurena, who knocked in the eventual game-winner on a penalty kick in the NCAA Quarterfinals against the Cavaliers last year, followed suit once again on Sunday as she calmly stepped up and fired the pk inside the back of the net just beyond the out stretched arms of Virginia goalkeeper Danielle DeLisle to give the Seminoles their third straight victory over the Cavaliers. 

"That was a real hard fought game for us,” said head coach Mark Krikorian. “Virginia gave us everything that we could handle.  We knew that the game on Thursday night against Virginia Tech was a tough game; we had to battle for 90 minutes.  Coming back against a very good Virginia team today, we knew they would push us to the limit.  Fortunately in the end, we did enough to create a chance and get a penalty and Ines buried it.”

The play began on a near side throw-in by Florida State as Jessica Price sent a long throw inside the box.  The ball was won by the Cavaliers heading the ball back toward the top of the box.  Hikaru Murakami raced in front of an UVa player to maintain possession for FSU as she took the clear off her body before laying it off to Jamia Fields.  Fields made a nice move to her right before being tripped by a Cavalier player which led to a foul and a penalty kick opportunity for the Seminoles.

“Hikaru played me the ball and I just wanted to get it across again,” added Fields. “It came across my body and the girl tripped me.  If not a shot, then right across the goal, I was so close (to firing a shot on goal) so if anything we would have gotten something out of that play.”

The goal for Jaurena was her third of the season as all three have gone down as game-winners.  The French native now has eight career game-winning goals with five coming in the ACC – the second most by a Seminole against league foes in school history.

“After beating Virginia at home and scoring the penalty kick, if I don’t have a smile than I shouldn’t be on the team,” said Jaurena. “I knew what I was doing (when I stepped up to the ball), we have been practicing it.  I kind of wanted to take it but wasn’t too sure because I kicked the penalty against them last year.  I stressed more after the pk than I did before because I really didn’t have time to think about it.”

The shutout was FSU’s 12th of the season while the Seminoles extended their school record shutout streak to nine straight games.  FSU also set the school record Sunday afternoon for consecutive shutout minutes as the streak currently sits at 893:40 surpassing the previous record of 799:29 established back in 2003.  The Seminoles have still just allowed three goals in 14 matches this year while not giving up a goal against an ACC opponent in each of their first seven games. 

“Again, I thought we limited the chances at our goal which is significant,” added Krikorian.  “I thought both teams had one really good look, but overall it was a very good performance. Our goalkeeping and collective defending has been very, very good all season long. Today, we were pretty good against a very good team.”

Kelsey Wys played the entire match between the posts as she was credited with four saves and her eighth shutout of the season.  The redshirt junior keeper improved to 13-0-0 on the year while lowering her goals against average to an ACC-best 0.25. 

“Virginia is one of the team that plays closest to our style so I think that one of our goals before the game was to come in and show them that we can play the style of soccer that they play and to match their intensity,” said Wys.  “The defense did a good job once again of limiting their chances.”

FSU remains the only undefeated team in the nation at 14-0-0, while running its all-time unbeaten streak to a school record 14 games. 

The win on Sunday also assured the Seminoles of a first round host site in the upcoming ACC Tournament which will be held on Sunday, October 28.  The top four seeds in the ACC will serve as a host for the opening round matches.

Both teams combined for just four shots in the first 45 minutes as Virginia outshot FSU 3-1.  Neither team was credited with a save while the Cavaliers registered two corners to zero for the Seminoles.

The first scoring chance of the game for the Seminoles came in the 59th minute when Tiffany McCarty won a 50/50 ball near midfield and made a nice move to evade three Cavaliers.  With green space in front of her, McCarty began a breakaway down the middle of the field before passing ahead to her right to Dagny Brynjarsdottir.  The Icelandic native took two touches before firing a shot wide of the right post. 

A turnover by the Seminoles in Virginia’s offensive third nearly led to the Cavaliers’ first goal of the game but Wys was there with an outstanding save on a shot by Caroline Miller in the 64th minute. 

“She was able to break down our backline a little bit,” added Wys. “I was able to come out and get set to make the goal look smaller. I think she probably saw the goal a little smaller and she just tried to rip a shot but luckily I was able to get there.”

Kassey Kallman returned the favor in the 78th minute as she made a nice run to get behind the Cavalier defense on a long ball played inside the 18-yard box by Casey Short.  Following another Price throw-in, Virginia tried to clear the ball but Short sent the ball back inside the box from just beyond midfield where Kallman timed her run perfectly heading the ball just wide of the left post. 

Florida State outshot Virginia 9-8 in the second half but neither team could find the back of the net during regulation forcing overtime.  It marked the first overtime game for the Seminoles this year and the first since the 2011 ACC Championship game against Wake Forest. 

Both teams registered one shot in the overtime period as Florida State’s found the back of the net on Jaurena’s pk conversion. 

Virginia finished the match with a 12-11 shots advantage while both teams took five corner kicks. 

Kallman led the Seminoles with three shots as two of those shots went on frame.  UVa had three players with three shots apiece including Morgan Brian, Makenzy Doniak and Miller. 

Florida State completed the regular season schedule undefeated at home with a 9-0-0 record.  The Seminoles have three remaining games on the docket with all three coming on the road.
