HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 24, 2012 -- The James Madison men's soccer team defeated the William and Mary Tribe 1-0 in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup Wednesday evening at University Park.

The victory improved the Dukes' record to 7-5-3 overall, 5-1-2 in the CAA. The Tribe fell to 3-10-3 overall, 1-5-2 in the CAA.

JMU junior midfielder Karel Manrau (Neuchâtel, Switzerland/Jean-Piaget) scored the first goal of his career at 26:40 of the first half on a right-footed shot to the lower right corner of the goal past diving William and Mary goalkeeper Alex Harrington (Arlington, Va./Bishop O’Connell).

The goal came as a result of a Steven Mashinski (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) cross that took a deflection off a  W&M defender right into the path of Manrau, who quickly slotted it to the corner to give the Dukes a 1-0 advantage that they would not relinquish.

The Tribe outshot the Dukes 15-13 but could not solve JMU freshman goalkeeper Kyle Morton (Vandalia, Ohio/Shattuck St. Mary's). Morton had five saves on the night, none more important than a diving reaction save off a six-yard shot from W&M junior defender Zachary Montebell (Winfield, W. Va./Hurricane) just a few minutes after the Dukes took the lead.

The Tribe mustered its fair share of opportunities, but few were dangerous.

JMU continued to hold onto third place in the CAA with the win and boosted its chances of hosting a CAA tournament game.  The Dukes have 17 points, trailing second-place Northeastern (20 points) by three, and league-leading Drexel (22) by five points with two games remaining. The Dukes hold a five-point lead over Hofstra and George Mason, who are tied for fourth place with 12 points apiece.

Six teams qualify for the CAA Tournament, and the top two teams in the final league standings receive first-round byes.  The number three and four teams host first-round games against the number six and five teams, respectively.

The Dukes return to the field Sunday for their final home regular-season game vs. Georgia State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

JMU Associate Head Coach Tom Foley:
"Every game in the CAA, especially down the stretch, is going to be a battle.  Everybody's fighting for the remanining points, going into the CAA Tournament.  William and Mary's a very good team, they possess the ball very well, they're a very technical team.  They can knock it around, and they put us under a tremendous amount of pressure.  Our defense was able to keep the ball from going in the back of the net.  A lot of guys threw themselves in front of shots, (Kyle Morton) made saves (and), a lot of people worked hard against a very good William and Mary team."
