HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 31, 2012 -- James Madison (1-2-0) got two goals each from senior All-America Paul Wyatt and sophomore Josh Grant en route to a 6-1 win over St. Bonaventure (0-3-0) in men's soccer Friday night in the opening round of the JMU/Fairfield Inn by Marriott Invitational Tournament at University Park.

In the day's first game, Virginia Tech (2-1-0) edged Temple (0-1-0) 1-0, as the Hokies scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.

In the JMU game, Wyatt (Modbury, England/Ivybridge) got the Dukes on the scoreboard less than five minutes into the match.  Sophomore Boyd Reid (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering) served a ball from the left side of the field to the right side, where redshirt sophomore Steven Mashinski (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) redirected the ball into the box.  Wyatt controlled the ball and hit a left-footed volley from 10 yards to just left of the center of the goal.

Freshman Tom Fouhy (Buckinghamshire, England/Dr. Challoner's) gave JMU a 2-0 lead at the half with a score in the 33rd minute.  Fouhy got the ball off the St. Bonaventure defense and dribbled 20 yards into the box, where he hit a low shot to the left from 12 yards.

The Dukes had two other first-half shots that hit the crossbar, one by Grant (Plymouth, England/Torpoint College) in the 30th minute and another by redshirt sophomore Jamal Umar (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) in the 39th minute.

The Bonnies' best chance in the opening half came when a sharply-angled shot by junior James Reed (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) was saved by redshirt junior goalkeeper Colin Newcity (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) in the 35th minute.

JMU scored twice in the opening five minutes of the second period, getting goals from Wyatt just 1:03 into the half and from Grant at the 4:45 mark.  Just over five minutes later freshman Bjarki Aðalsteinsson (Kópavogur, Iceland/Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi) headed a free kick from redshirt senior Christian McLaughlin (Herndon, Va./Herndon) into the net to push the Dukes' lead to 5-0.  Then in the 68th minute Grant scored off a pass from Fouhy.

St. Bonaventure got on the scoreboard in the 73rd minute when senior Adam Scott (Rutherglen, Scotland/John McCrae) intercepted a JMU pass and beat Newcity with a shot from 10 yards out.

In the day's first game, Virginia Tech junior Jed Prater (Somersby, Australia/Narabeen Sports) converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute, hitting a low, hard shot just to the right of center of the goal.  Temple sophomore goalkeeper Dan Scheck (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) partially blocked the ball, but the momentum of the shot carried the ball into the goal.

The penalty was assessed after a Temple defender was called for a foul on a Virginia Tech player near the end line.

With 26:40 left in game, an apparent Temple goal was called back for offside.  Junior Vaughn Spurrier (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) crossed the ball into the box from the right side to the far post, where senior Cody Calafiore (Howell, N.J./Howell) headed the ball into the net, but was ruled offside.

With 13:29 left in game, Temple freshman Jared Martinelli (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) sent a ball into the box from the right side.  Redshirt sophomore Chas Wilson (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum) hit a point-blank shot at Tech junior goalkeeper Kyle Renfro (Forest, Va./Brookville), who stopped the ball with a kick save at the goal line at the left corner of the goal.
