JP Correa Named B1G Player of the Week

September 15, 2014

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 15, 2014) – After scoring two goals, including the game-winner to lift the Rutgers men’s soccer team to its first ever Big Ten victory, redshirt junior JP Correa (Montville, N.J.) has been named the Big Ten Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

Rutgers captured a 3-2 win at Wisconsin in overtime on Friday night in front of the Big Ten Network cameras, bringing home the first Big Ten Conference win of any Scarlet Knight team since joining the league on July 1.

With the Scarlet Knights down 1-0 at the intermission, Correa scored his first goal of the night and first of the 2014 season seven minutes into the second half. Freshman Brandon Tetro (Freehold, N.J.) threw the ball in from right side to Correa along the end line. Correa made his way to the goal sneaking the ball in between the post and keeper.

After a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation, Correa notched his third career game-winner in the game's 98th minute. Junior Thomas O’Rourke (Lawrenceville, N.J.) took control of the ball at the end line off a rebound, turned and lifted the ball into the crowd in front of the Wisconsin net. Correa, from the back of the pack, leaped up and headed the ball in to give the first Rutgers team in history a Big Ten win.

Correa became the second Scarlet Knight with a multiple goal game with his two goals against the Badgers. For his career he currently has 25 points (9G, 7A).

The Rutgers men’s soccer team returns home this week hosting a pair of games at Yurcak Field. RU welcomes in-state rival Monmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 16 and Indiana will serve as the Scarlet Knights’ first Big Ten home game on Saturday, Sept. 20. Both games kickoff at 7 p.m.
