Keane’s Last Second Goal Gives Men’s Soccer 2-1 Decision Over IUPUI

CINCINNATI - Ben Keane’s goal with one second remaining sent the University of Cincinnati men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over IUPUI on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Gettler Stadium.

Keane (Mount Laurel, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) tucked a corner from Alan Rovira (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley/Tyler JC) in the upper right corner moments before the clock hit zero to give the Bearcats the decision.

UC scored early and late in the victory, taking a lead just seven minutes in when Will Diebold (Coppell, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) rolled a ball through the middle and found Brad Miguel (High Wycombe, England/Amersham & Wycombe College) who converted to put the Bearcats up, 1-0.

The score stayed at 1-0 most of the match until IUPUI evened the score in the 86th minute. Jonny Williams headed in a throw-in from Clint Hoffar to tie the match and it appeared the Jaguars would force overtime.

The Bearcats wouldn’t need any extra time, however. Rovira took the corner after a scramble in front of the net saw IUPUI desperately send a loose ball out over the end line to give UC the corner in hopes the Bearcats did not have enough time to set anything up.

Rovira proved them wrong, finding Keane at the top of the box and setting up the sophomore perfectly to send it into the upper corner.

“Right place at the right time,” Keane said, succinctly.

For the match, UC outshot IUPUI, 15-12, and had a 7-5 advantage in shots on net. UC’s Alex Gill (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) made four saves to earn his fourth victory of the season, while Jaguar keeper Eduardo Cortes made five saves.

Next up for the Bearcats is another non-conference showdown at Gettler Stadium, with Belmont set to visit on Saturday, Oct. 19. The match with the Bruins is set for 4:00 p.m. following the UC football homecoming game and fans can enter the soccer match free of charge with a ticket stub from the football game.
