Kent State Soccer Posts 1-0 Victory over Duquesne
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Kent State soccer team (5-2-0) notched its second straight victory and third 1-0 win of the season Sunday afternoon with their one-goal victory over Duquesne at Rooney Field.
Two days after scoring her first collegiate goal against Youngstown State, freshman Stephanie Haugh (Richmond Hill, Ontario) scored the game’s only goal, striking in the 68th minute of play. Sophomore Megan Jackson (Medina, Ohio) set up the play, winning the ball in the midfield and playing the ball through to Haugh.
“She hit a fantastic shot,” said Kent State head coach Rob Marinaro of Haugh’s goal. “It was a near-post shot that caught their goalkeeper off guard.”
Defensively, Kent State held the Dukes to just five shots on goal; from there, senior Kelly Sherwood (Strongsville, Ohio) was up to the task, stopping all five attempts for her third shutout of the season and the 11th of her career.
“It was a superb team effort,” said Marinaro. “Our back line played extremely well, and Sherwood made some key saves to give us the opportunity to earn the win.”
Prior to the game, Kent State joined Duquesne in observing a moment of silence on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
