Kent State Soccer Tops IUPUI, 4-0, To End Non-Conference Slate

September 16, 2011

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women’s soccer team posted their second straight shutout and had its second-best offensive output of the season Friday afternoon with their 4-0 victory over IUPUI at Zoeller Field.

The victory, the sixth through eight games for the Golden Flashes, matches a team record for non-conference wins in a season, set during the 1998 campaign. It also gives Kent State a three-game winning streak heading into the start of MAC play, which begins Sept. 23 at home against Miami (Ohio).

“(The team) has built some confidence throughout the non-conference schedule, and we need to carry that into the Mid-American Conference,” said head coach Rob Marinaro.

Continuing her hot streak from last week, reigning MAC player of the week Stephanie Haugh (Richmond Hill, Ontario) tallied two goals for the Golden Flashes, striking less than 10 minutes apart during a second-half span. Haugh scored on her own corner kick in the 52nd minute and followed up with a one-time shot in the 60th minute.

Sophomore Jessacca Gironda (Akron, Ohio) got her team-best fifth goal of the season and third game-winning strike of the year with her goal just 5:12 into the game. Off a throw-in by senior Gabi Ingram (Indianapolis, Ind.), sophomore Jaclyn Dutton (Bridgeport, Ohio) quickly spun and one-touched a serve to Gironda, who one-timed a shot from the right side.

Junior Megan Repas (Avon, Ohio) finished up the game’s scoring in the 80th minute when her 35-yard ball on the frame was unable to be controlled by IUPUI goalkeeper Giselle Guzman.

Dutton finished with two assists on the game, while Sara Henderson (Strongsville, Ohio) also assisted on Haugh’s second goal.

IUPUI (1-4-2) outshot Kent State 17-15, but many of their attempts were from distance. The Jaguars were held to just three shots on goal for the day, with Kent State senior Kelly Sherwood (Strongsville, Ohio) making all three saves. Sherwood and junior Julie Keslar (Akron, Ohio) teamed up for the shutout.
