King plays to 3-3 stalemate with Limestone

October 2, 2013

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Coming off of a nonconference win on Saturday, the King University women's soccer team returned to Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday against Limestone College. After grabbing the early lead, the Tornado fell behind, but bounced back and Devon Shanklin evened the score at 3-3 in the 77th minute. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation or either overtime period as the game ended in a draw.

King (2-6-1, 0-1-1 CC) didn't waste any time taking the lead as Shalisa Barnett played a cross from the right side of the field in the 25th minute. The ball was deflected by Casey Shanklin, to find Rayna Spears' foot at the back post. Spears then slid the ball past the Limestone keeper for her third goal of the year.

However, Limestone (3-4-2, 1-2-1 CC) had an answer just four minutes later as Gabriella Reid took a pass from Katie Belser and finished the breakaway goal to even the score at one. The Saints struck again in the 31st minute to take the lead on a Tori Waddell goal. Waddell got behind the King defense after taking a pass from Beth Hervig and put her shot to the right side of the net to give Limestone the lead.

The Tornado had a barrage of chances near the end of the first half as Rachel Thorpe had a shot hit the post in the 41st minute. Lindsay Curtis then had a shot go wide and Devon Shanklin had a shot blocked. Limestone countered with a chance, butMorgan Lawson smothered the shot to keep the score at 2-1 at halftime.

King came out in the second half and looked to tally the equalizer as Paula Doran ripped a shot in the 50th minute that hit the post.

Play then went to the other end of the field, and the Saints' Waddell struck again, this time in the 66th minute. She took a pass from Ciera Wall on the left laced her shot past the keeper to extend the lead to 3-1.

However, King also had a response as Thorpe found the back of the net 58 seconds later. The sophomore's shot from the right center of the box glanced off the crossbar on its way to the back of the cage to pull King within one.

King's next scoring chance came in the 77th minute as Doran had two corner kicks. On the second corner kick, she placed the ball at the back post where Devon Shanklin got a foot on the ball and punched it in to knot the score at 3-3.

Neither team threatened for the rest of regulation as the contest went to overtime. In the first overtime session, both teams ripped two shots, each putting one on net. Limestone's Emily Ludwig had the first scoring chance, but her shot was stopped by Nicole Dagher. Barnett then had a chanced in the 100th minute, but her shot was saved to send the game to double overtime.

Barnett had another chance in the 110th minute, but Mariette Martinez came up with her fourth save of the game, and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.

Both teams registered 16 shots with Limestone placing nine on goal to King's seven. The Saints had the advantage in corner kicks at 10-3.

King will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Belmont Abbey College. Kickoff from Belmont, N.C., is set for 12:00 p.m.
