Knights Open ECC Play wth 5-2 win at Daemen

September 21, 2013

Amherst, N.Y. - The Queens College men’s soccer team used a huge second half (to the tune of five goals) to propel them to a 5-2 win over Daemen in the school’s East Coast Conference opener on Saturday in Amherst, New York.  Midfielder Glen Reid led the Knights with a goal and three assists in the win.

The Knights came out by pressing the attack against the Wildcats as Daemen was held with just one shot until the 18th minute, while Queens managed to take four over the same time.  In fact, for the half, QC managed eight shots, to four for Daemen.  Goalie Sean Geoghegan turned aside three shots in the first 45 minutes of action.

Three minutes into the second half saw the Knights take the lead.  After earning a corner kick, Reid lifted the ball towards the goal, and Pol Narbona got a head to it and beat the keeper for his second marker of the season.  The Knights had a 1-0 lead.

Just past the hour mark saw Daemen level the score.  From twenty yards out, Alex Reid volleyed a shot past the outstretched arms of Geoghegan for a goal.  Reid’s second marker of the season tied the game at 1-1.

Seven minutes after that and QC would regain the lead on nearly the same play that earned them their first marker.  This time Reid was on the other side of it as Peter Touros lifted a corner kick into the box where Reid jumped and headed the ball into the back of the net to put Queens up, 2-1.

Less than a minute later, Queens pushed its lead to 3-1 capitalizing on a corner kick for the third time.  Once again Reid took the corner , and he found Jorge Artavia who calmly blasted the ball past the keeper for the score.

Ten minutes later, Daemen cut into the Knights lead as Kyle Clifford connected on his team-best fifth goal of the season off a free kick.  All of a sudden, the Wildcats were within one, at 3-2.  Exactly three minutes later, Reid connected on a free kick himself following a foul, and the Knights were ahead, 4-2.  An insurance goal came for QC with ten seconds remaining as Tyler Iocco took in a blocked shot and beat the keeper to make the score, 5-2.

The QC men’s soccer team returns to action on Sunday, September 22 when they face Roberts Wesleyan College.  The kickoff for that game is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
