Kordistos scores twice in last 10 minutes to lead FLC to 3-1 win at Adams State

October 31, 2011

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Kosta Kordistos scored twice in the final 10 minutes to lead No. 3 Fort Lewis (17-1-0 overall, 13-1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 3-1 win at Adams State (3-12-2, 2-11-1) today.

Just 1:07 after Adams State’s Norberto Lopez had tied the game at 1-1, Thomas Hoang intercepted a goal kick and passed it to Kordistos for what proved to be the game-winner at 80:16.

Kordistos added an insurance goal with just 29 seconds remaining when he took a pass from Casey Dean, dribbled down the right sideline, before launching a shot from the box. The two goals upped Kordistos’ season total to five – impressive considering he missed the past 13 games with a knee injury.

Fort Lewis grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when defender Mason Zupan scored on a header at 31:23. Joey Madigan floated a free kick into the box that was initially headed by Berekk Blackwell before Zupan got his head on the second ball. The goal was the first of his collegiate career.

The marker looked like it would be all the Skyhawks would need until ASC’s Connor Schultz flicked a ball into the box that Lopez chipped over FLC goalkeeper Ryan Wirth at 79:09.

Fort Lewis outshot the 24-11 overall and 11-4 in shots on frame. Miller made six saves for the Grizzlies, while Wirth stopped three shots for the Skyhawks.

Several FLC regulars were not in the lineup for today’s regular season finale. Defender Fabian Kling continues to recover from a knee injury suffered earlier in the month, while midfielder Cory Dean and defender Artur Piperkov sat out as a precautionary measure because of cumulative yellow cards. Both players have accumulated four yellows during the season, and would automatically sit out the next game if they received five cards during the regular season. The total increases from five cumulative cards to eight for the league playoffs.

Fort Lewis hosts the RMAC postseason semifinals and championship next weekend. The Skyhawks will play in Friday’s second semifinal at 3:00 p.m. at Dirks Field against the winner of Wednesday’s first round game between fourth-seeded Colorado Mines (10-6-1, 8-5-1) and fifth-seeded UC-Colorado Springs (9-8-1, 7-6-1).

Friday’s other semifinal pits second-seeded Regis (13-3-1, 10-3-1) against the winner of the first round matchup between third-seeded Metro State (12-5-1, 10-4) and sixth-seeded Colorado State-Pueblo (5-10-3, 5-7-2). The Regis semifinal game begins at 12:30 p.m. at Dirks Field.
