NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington women’s soccer freshman midfielder Kristi Abbate was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team voted on by the league’s coaches, the A-10 announced on Wednesday.

“This is a well-deserved honor for Kristi as she is an up-and-coming player in the A-10,” said first-year head coachSarah Barnes. “We are confident in her skills as well as her continued development and we are prepared for her to make an impact in the conference in the years to come.”

Abbate was the lone freshman and one of just five players to start all 18 matches for the Colonials this season. She matched senior teammate Adriana Moya for the team lead with eight points on three goals and two assists on the year.

The Northport, N.Y., native tallied a team-high two game-winning goals this season - against Towson on Sept. 7 and against Howard on Sept. 21. The attack-minded Abbate also took a team-high 34 shots and recorded a .471 shots-on-goal percentage.

Abbate and the Colonials wrapped their first season under Coach Barnes’ helm with an overall record of 5-12-1 and a 1-8-0 mark in the A-10. GW graduates four seniors this spring and is slated to return 28 players to next fall’s roster.
