Lady Bisons soccer falls 2-0 after late goal

October 16, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team held Jacksonville scoreless for the first 78 minutes of play but fell 2-0 after the Dolphins scored a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes in Atlantic Sun Conference action Friday night in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Lady Bisons fall to 4-6-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the A-Sun. The Dolphins, picked to finish second in the Preseason A-Sun Coach’s Poll, improve to 8-5-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the league.

“Quite honestly, tonight we were just beaten by a better Jacksonville team,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “In just about every phase of the game they were sharper, winning second balls and their runs were crisper.

“Unfortunately for us, the better team won.”

Kaitlyn Bassett scored both goals for JU just six minutes apart. She notched her first goal off a rebound from Sarah Moghadas in the 78th minute. In the 84th minute, Joy Grove set Bassett up to find the back of the net.

“We dug in and defended pretty well,” O’Brien said. “Late in the game we were in it. Ultimately their quality showed through and scored a great goal, then followed up with a quick one on a set piece.”

Bassett is second to Lipscomb freshman Ellen Lundy with goals scored this season in the A-Sun. Lundy has 12 goals while Basset added two Friday to bring her total to 10.

Freshman goalkeeper Anna Buhigas made seven saves for the Lady Bisons as she continues to lead the A-Sun in saves with 79 on the year. Sarah Sierra had one save for the Dolphins.

Lipscomb stays in Jacksonville for a noon contest against North Florida on Sunday.

“I’m disappointed because I know we’ve got more than what we showed tonight,” O’Brien said. “But we’ve got to move past it and recover Saturday. Hopefully we’ll put out a better performance Sunday.”
