Lady Hornets Drop Heartbreaker In Overtime

September 16, 2013

The Alabama State University soccer team was defeated in overtime by the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs 3-2 Friday afternoon after a 30 minute rain delay at the ASU Soccer Complex.

"We have to work on communication and we were very careless early in the game." Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith said. "We showed character in the second period by coming back and tying up the game."

The Lady Bulldogs (4-4) scored in the 17th minute of the contest, when forward Kennedy Garrett knocked in an unassisted chip shot. Midfielder Maddi Meglic added a second goal for UNC-Asheville in the 44th minute of the contest off a corner kick. The Lady Bulldogs outshot the Lady Hornets 10-5.

In the second half, the Lady Hornets (3-4) came out on the offensive, outshooting the Lady Bulldogs 10-7. Forward Ariela Lewis scored her first goal in the 77thminute with an assist from forward Anastasia McCleary to make it 2-1. In the 80th minute, midfielder Kaedi Walther scored a goal to tie the match at 2-2 off an assist from Ariela Lewis.

"In the first half, we really weren't that good, just careless with the ball and really weren't playing with a lot of energy," Coach Smith said. "In the second half, the tides changed. We came out playing with energy and started being aggressive with the ball, which created opportunities for us"

In sudden death overtime, the Lady Bulldogs came out in the first minute to close the game with a goal from Shenny Lehhart.

The Lady Hornets will host Presbyterian College at the ASU Soccer Complex Sunday, September 15. The match is set for 1 p.m.
