Lady Lions Give McBride Debut Win

August 18, 2017

HAMMOND, La. – Junior Christina Cutura and senior Maddie Kresevic each scored a goal as Southeastern Louisiana made Chris McBride’s debut as Lady Lions head coach a successful one with a 3-0 win over Jackson State in the season opener Friday night in Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern (1-0) put 27 shots on goal while freshman goalkeeper Michaela Hawthorn blocked a pair of Jackson State second-half shots. Faith Toennies made 13 saves for the Lady Tigers (0-1).

“It was a big team effort today,” McBride said. “The girls have been working hard all season adjusting to new players and two new coaches. They’ve done phenomenal, especially with 11 new players. I was really proud of their efforts and the way they played the game, the way they handle themselves with many playing their first college game. It was pretty impressive.”

Southeastern took a 1-0 lead at the 5:11 mark on an own goal as sophomore Amber Marinero’s shot off a cross from Kresevic was knocked in off a Jackson State defender.

Cutura made it 2-0 at 25:20 after heading in a corner kick from freshman Larissa Galvez Estrada.

Kresevic wrapped up the scoring with a penalty kick at the 66:07 mark. Cutura was fouled in the box to set up the score.

Southeastern will be on the road next week, visiting Georgia State on Friday and Alabama State on Sunday. The Lady Lions return home to play Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 1.
