Lady Scots Force Overtime Draw
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Margaret Cross came through for the Lady Scots soccer team once again with a game-tying goal in the 84th minute of action against Salem College Tuesday afternoon. Less than one minute after Salem forward Anna Trakas scored to take the lead, Cross leveled the match at 1-1 to force overtime and an eventual draw in Great South conference play. The Lady Scots are now 6-6-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the GSAC. Salem is now 7-4-2 (2-2-1 GSAC).
“We played extremely well,” said head coach Mark Duble. “We controlled the match and possession of the ball but couldn’t find the winning goal.”
Rightly so, the Lady Scots took a total of 18 shots, including four from Cross, but were unable to find the back of the net until Salem put the pressure of defeat upon them. Dana Streufert, Sheri Koenig, and Teagan Wood all had multiple shot attempts as well, none of which produced any goals.
Trakas’ goal for the Spirits came on a well-struck ball from roughly 25 yards out. Sophomore forward Amanda Orsino had the assist.
Approximately 30 seconds later, Teagan Wood dealt a crossing pass that was finished nicely by Cross to tie the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Bales stayed busy on Covenant’s end with eight saves for the match, only one off her career high.
The Lady Scots will return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct 22 at 4 p.m. for a match on the road against former conference foe Milligan College. The Lady Buffaloes are currently 7-4-1 overall and 4-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
