BEAUMONT, Texas - Kristin Bos' school-record 10th goal of the season just 2:22 into the game, propelled the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 2-0 win over Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference women's soccer game Friday night.

With the win, Lamar (10-8-1 overall, 6-2-0 Southland) claimed second place in the conference, its highest-ever finish in the six-year history of the program. The Lady Cardinals, who set a school mark with their 10th win of the year, earned a first-round bye in the conference tournament, and advanced to the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at McNeese State. Lamar will play the winner of Thursday's game between No. 3 seed Southeastern Louisiana and No. 6 seed McNeese State.

"This was a tremendous win for us," first-year Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "Getting that bye is huge."

Bos' goal came with Lamar going against the strong wind, that gusted up to 33 mph at times.

"We haven't been able to score early this year," Cervantes said. "To get that goal quickly was key tonight."

Bos assisted on an insurance goal by Jannet Hernandez with 13:45 remaining in regulation.  The three points on Friday boosted Bos' season total to a school-record 23 points, breaking the old mark of 21 set by Lisa Hance last season and equaled by Kimmy Albeno this year.

Goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot made four saves for her sixth shutout of the season, tying the school mark set by Jennifer Gibbs last season. Fontenot registered her school-record 10th win of the season as she improved her mark to 10-5-1 this year.

Kylie Hambleton made five saves for Sam Houston State (7-10-1, 4-3-1).

"I'm so proud of this team," Cervantes said. "They worked hard and really earned this."

The Southland Conference Tournament gets under way at McNeese State on Thursday with a pair of games. No. 4 seed Oral Roberts plays No. 5 seed Sam Houston State at 4:30 p.m., followed by the McNeese State-Southeastern Louisiana game at 7 p.m.

Top-seeded Stephen F. Austin will face the Oral Roberts-Sam Houston winner at 4:30 p.m. Friday, followed by the Lamar game at 7 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at McNeese State. The tournament champion receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Single-session tickets on Thursday and Friday are available for $10. Two-day, two-session tickets are $15. Tickets for Sunday's championship are $8 for adults and $6 for youth. Children under the age of 5 and student at Southland Conference institutions are free with a valid ID.
