Lamar falls to Sam Houston State

October 12, 2013

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Jannet Hernandez moved into sole possession of third place on Lamar’s career goals-scored list, but the Cardinals dropped a 5-2 decision to host Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference women’s soccer game Friday night.

Hernandez’s goal was her fifth of the season and 11th of her career, moving her past Lisa Hance on the Lamar chart. Hernandez is fifth on Lamar’s career points chart with 27.

Mari Olastuen scored her first career goal for Lamar (4-9-1 overall, 1-5-1 Southland). The loss leaves Lamar almost needing to run the table in its last five games if it hopes to earn a berth in next month’s Southland Conference Tournament.

“I’ve never been prouder of a team after a loss,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “The breaks didn’t go our way, but they never gave up.”

Lamar freshman Zoey Stephenson made eight saves in her first collegiate start.

Sam Houston State (5-7-1, 3-3-0) got goals from four different players and also scored an own goal, after Stephenson made a spectacular save only to see the ball carom into the goal off of a Lamar defender.

“That’s a tough game for Zoey to make her first start in,” Cervantes said. “She made some great saves and ran into some bad luck.”

Lamar returns to action at 1 pm. Sunday when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

“It’s do or die now,” Cervantes said. “We just have to come out strong from the start.”
