Lancers pierce Patriots on Senior Day 3-0

October 30, 2011

FLORENCE, SC – Senior defender Mackenzie King scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Longwood University to a 3-0 season-ending win over Francis Marion University, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 30) in women’s soccer action.

Both teams compete as NCAA Division I independents and Sunday’s match was the season finale for Francis Marion (4-13-1) and Longwood (7-7-4).  The Patriots, who started five freshmen, exceeded their win total of the 2010 campaign by one, but of the team’s losses, five were by just one goal.

Longwood outshot the Patriots 14-2 and led in corner kicks 7-0.

After a scoreless first half, Lindsey Ottavio scored Longwood’s first goal at the 53:00 mark when she received a cross from King and one-touched the ball in from 6-yards out.  Just 4:40 later, King doubled the margin to 2-0 on a 24-yard shot from the right side that landed in the upper left corner of the FMU goal.

Stephanie Green tallied the final goal at 66:11 when she took cross from Kacie Oliver and arched a 14-yard shot over FMU senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock.

Vetock ended her final match with five saves, including a spectacular one-handed push over the crossbar effort of a blast off the foot of Oliver in the 55th minute.

Longwood junior goalkeeper Kyra Byron did not register a save en route to the shutout win.

Francis Marion’s best scoring opportunity came in the 81st minute when a cross eluded Byron and FMU freshman Elizabeth Asare knocked the ball toward an open net, only to have Longwood defender Rebecca Soares block the ball from crossing the goal line.

Vetock and midfielder Erin Breen were both honored before the match in Senior Day festivities.  Vetock ended her career with 351 saves and on Sunday surpassed 5,000 minutes played in goal.  Breen was played in her 48th career contest.

The match was also the final contest to be played on the FMU Soccer Field, as the new Hartzler Field in the Griffin Athletic Complex will open in 2012.  The Patriot women end the time on the FMU Soccer Field with an all-time record of 101-27-7.
