Late Double OT Goal Snaps Terriers Streak

Brooklyn Heights, New York---The St. Francis Brooklyn men’s soccer team saw its unbeaten streak snap at seven games on Friday evening, as the Terriers fell 1-0 in double overtime to the Saint Francis University Red Flash at Brooklyn Bridge Park. 

In a match that featured the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the NSCAA/Continental Tire North Atlantic Rankings, St. Francis Brooklyn now stands at 7-3-1; 1-1-0 NEC while the Red Flash improve to 9-2-3; 2-0-1 NEC.

Four minutes into the contest, the Red Flash had a scoring chance off the foot of Nick Kolarac, but his attempt was directed wide left of the goal.  The Terriers’ first attempt came in the 10th minute of play as junior forward Kevin Correa received the feed from freshman defender Paul Galimi.  The Flushing native blasted a left-footed attempt from twenty-yards out but was denied by Red Flash goalkeeper Daniel Valcicak.  Nearly three minutes later, senior co-captain John Johansson narrowly gave the home eleven the first tally of the match as his shot was stopped by Valcicak from point blank range.

Red Flash midfielder Pablo Medina attempted a free kick in the 18th minute from approximately thirty yards out that was stopped by Terriers’ netminder Jack Binks.  The Terriers, once again raced out on the attack as they had two scoring chance on back-to-back possession.  The first attempt, in the 20th minute, senior forward Gabriel Bagot received the pass from Correa his header attempt was kept out by Valcicak.  The second attempt, from senior midfielder James Caicdeo, was another header chance but was directed wide right. 

Binks came up with a huge save in the 28th minute as Saint Francis U’s Ryan Byers jumped high in the air and headed the ball on goal that the Darlington, England product was able to turn away. With just five minutes remaining in the first half, Bagot had the best chance in the stanza, as he was deep in the box and headed the ball towards the top right-portion of the net but was denied the tally by Valcicak, preserving the 0-0 stalemate. 

St. Francis Brooklyn quickly raced out of the intermission as senior midfielder Viktor Bakkioui attempted a header but was stopped by the Red Flash netminder in the 47th minute.  The Terriers, once again, had a shot in the 73rd minute as co-captain Andy Cormack free-kick from twenty-five yards sailed high over the goal.  The Terriers appeared to score first in the 86th minute as freshman Fabian Suele appeared to net the match’s first goal, but the goal was waved off by the referees as a Terrier was considered to be offsides on the play.

In the first overtime, Saint Francis U. nearly ended the match in the 96th minute as Bryan Causey shot from point blank range was negated by Binks keeping the contest deadlocked at zero.

Two minutes into the double overtime session, the Red Flash struck for the game winner off the foot of Stefan Sjekloca.  He played the ball off a pass from Causey that went over the outstretched reach of Binks to give the Red Flash their ninth victory of the season.  With the goal allowed, Binks’ scoreless streak ended at 528:29 minutes as well as the Terriers unbeaten streak at Brooklyn Bridge Park-Pier 5 (2-1-1).

St. Francis Brooklyn will be back in action on Sunday, October 20th, as they welcome the Robert Morris University Colonials to Brooklyn Bridge Park-Pier 5.  Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
