Boca Raton, FL - Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie broke a scoreless match in the 87th minute with her team-leading ninth goal of the season to lift the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team past the University of Louisiana-Monroe 1-0 on Friday night at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

The win snapped a four-match losing skid, and senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes posted her second shutout of the season.

“This was an important win for us. The girls fought until the end,” said Brian Dooley, FAU’s head women’s soccer coach. “We had a lot of chances early in the game. Fortunately, Claire converted on her scoring chance late in the game.”

Emslie’s game-winning goal came after she beat the ULM defender at the top right corner of the 18-yard box. Her shot finished just inside the left post.

A few minutes earlier, ULM goalkeeper Alex Holland had stopped a penalty kick by Emslie.

“Claire did a good job of not putting her head down after missing the penalty kick,” noted Dooley. “We have played hard and competitive all season, with our last four matches being close (losing one-goal margins). It was important that we found a way to win in this match.”

Emslie, a Scotland native, ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference with nine goals this season.

The Owls held a commanding 27-8 shot advantage over the Warhawks, including a 16-4 edge on shots on goal. Emslie led the Owls with eight shots, while freshman defender Dani Dangremond added five shots. Junior midfielder Marisa Russo, and sophomore defenders Yazmin Ongtengco and Olivia MBala each recorded three shots each.

Lantes made four saves in net, leaving her two saves shy of breaking Molly Keating’s school record of 321 saves in a career.

FAU improves to 4-10 on the season and 2-4 in conference action. The team will return to the pitch on Sunday, October 14, at 12:30 p.m. against the University of Louisiana. Prior to the match the program will honor seniors Breanna Lewis, Manon Transleau, Courtney Zwetsch and Lantes. ULM falls to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in SBC play.
