LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College men's soccer team increased its winning streak to three games with a 2-1 road victory over Rider to begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Alvaro Torrecilla knocked in the game-winning goal with just 39 seconds left in the contest.
Torrecilla scored his third goal of the season off a rebound in the final minute of play to keep the Gaels (8-1, 1-0 MAAC) from what would have been their second overtime appearance of the year. Mario Di Miceli had put the Maroon & Gold on the scoreboard with a 1-0 lead early in the game, scoring on an assist from Franklin Castellanos in the 17th minute.
Iona's lead held for much of the evening until Rider's (1-7-1, 0-1 MAAC) David Benavidez registered the equalizer in the 83rd minute off a through ball by Dan Friga.
Over 90 minutes, Iona mounted a 19-8 shot advantage. Rookie goalkeeper Borja Barbero made two saves in his eighth win. Jason Giordano had six saves for the Broncs.
The Gaels are back in road action at Loyola with a 1:00 pm tilt on Oct. 2.
